MEDIA INVITE

The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development hereby invites all media to attend and cover the Provincial rural development summit that will be held on 25-26 January 2010 at the Health Resource Centre in Mthatha.
The Summit will start at 9 am and will be preceded by a media briefing at 8.30 am.Rural development is one of the key priorities of the government. This is a government programme tailored to improve the lives of the people living in the countryside.

Rural areas are resource poor and devoid of social amenities. They are characterized by underdevelopment, poverty and unemployment.
The government intends to mediate this situation by introducing rural development programmes such as agriculture crop production, livestock development and the provision of the needed infrastructure.
However, other services like health, education and transport which these areas are devoid of would be catered for through this new rural development strategy that is meant to overhaul the present unpalatable socio-economic conditions in the countryside.

The Summit will endorse ways of implementing the Rural Development Strategy that have been refined during a Pre-summit workshop which was held on January 18 and 19 in East London.
The Rural Development Summit is a Provincial event coordinated and championed by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development under the aegis of the Premier’s Office. The Premier, Hon Noxolo Kiviet, national ministers, provincial director-general and most MEC’s will officiate at this event.
The media is invited to come to witness and record this historic socio-economic revolution unfolds when the country’s best development brains knuckle down at the Health Resource Centre to spearhead a new era for the province’s rural enclaves.
